Charles Rice Goff III conceived of this unique project as a way to begin the third millennium A.D. with a clean slate for humankind. The project began with the following announcement, promulgated throughout 1999 in a number of manners. Primarily the message was passed along on slips of paper stuffed into homerecording correspondences posted through the mail. It was also displayed in homerecording publications, announced on radio broadcasts, and transmitted via email:
"ATTENTION ALL YOU DIRTY HOMETAPERS
Right now is our last chance to clean up before the next millennium comes along. Taped Rugs Productions is seeking contributions for a compilation tape to be released sometime before the year 2000. All compositions must be about or relate to the subject of CLEANING UP (examples: brushing teeth, doing laundry, eliminating smut, disinfecting dirty politicians, spraying nasty solvents on computer chips, etc.) Pieces should be about five minutes in length on good quality analog tape -- sorry, no DATs. Only the best pieces will be chosen, so make yours a spic and span shiny one. Send to: Taped Rugs Productions, PO Box 146, Lawrence, Kansas, 66044-0146, USA."
The project was completed in late autumn of 1999, showcasing twenty-three original recordings and a few antique audio advertisements for cleaning products on a 90 minute cassette. Goff also produced a twenty-four page Dadaesque booklet of credits and cleaning-oriented cut-outs to go with the cassette. Home computer technologies for recording audio were expensive and in some ways awkward to use during this time period, so most of the original recordings were produced entirely on analog tape. The booklet was created with photocopies, scissors, and glue.
The entire collection of audio recordings is presented here:
